Dry creek vent areas for drainage and beauty.

If you have a home site that can utilize a gravity flow, daylighted vent system for your french drains, a dry creek type of construction may be a wonderful addition to your landscape.

The logistical considerations are as follows. If your rain drain discharges and perforated pipe french drain construction can be engineered to gravity flow in the manner that I have suggested in other areas of this site, and can maintain the grade away from the home, to the venting area, a dry creek area with boulders, rock and plantings may be a super way to create wildlife habitat, and also put the rainwater into the soil where it belongs.

These areas are many times the most enjoyable areas of your entire landscape, and sitting areas can be constructed next to them for maximum enjoyment. Use excavated dirt from your french drain construction to create your raised beds and planting in this area, without covering up your drainage creek where the drainage pipes spill out at grade level.

Put a spread out area of river rock where the pipes spill out, and hide them with rocks and boulders. This will prevent the water from carving a channel into the dirt and causing errosion. This is a much better idea than hauling off the dirt from french drain construction in a drop box, at a high price as well.

Most drop box haulers want clean fill, or have different definitions of what clean fill is, requiring the separation of roots, other wood debris , concrete, or trash from the drop box load. If attention is not paid to this separation you may be in for a call from the drop box hauler saying that you have a mixed load, and that it requires more money to satisfy them. This is not a fun thing to go through.

If you do haul away the dirt, be aware of people that will foul your load with garbage or other non-qualifying items prior to pick up, and sometimes in the middle of the night. This will cause you to be billed for a mixed load, or require you to go out to the haulers site and go through the entire load separating it out to their satisfaction.

This happens all too often.
